All patients were able to read and comprehend English and were given a written information sheet describing proper usage of the wrist monitor, which included diagrams. The measurements were performed at least 30 min after eating, smoking, or exercising and after 5 min of sitting in a chair equipped with an armrest and back support.
Auscultation was performed by two simultaneous observers using a single mercury manometer and dual-head stethoscope.

The same two observers measured all of the auscultatory readings. Both observers were experienced in the auscultatory technique, although they were not specifically trained for this study. Each observer recorded their measurement on a separate paper without knowledge of the other measurement. The date of the measurement was also noted. Both the wrist manometer and the upper arm mercury measurements were attached to a data recorder on a laptop computer.
All initial measurements were by the auscultatory technique. The second measurement was always by the Omron HEM wrist monitor.
The measurements were alternated in this sequence with a minimum of 1 min between readings. Observer comparison was made after the recorded fifth auscultatory value for determination of the total number of auscultatory measurements.
If the auscultatory SBP or DBP difference between observers was within 10 mm Hg, five auscultatory and four wrist measurements for each subject were recorded. If the auscultatory SBP or DBP difference was 10 mm Hg or more, an additional double auscultatory measurement was performed and recorded six total auscultatory readings.
Blood pressure self-measurement home BP The patients measured their blood pressure themselves with the oscillometric wrist instrument from Omron wrist instrument HEM- IT with position sensor. Between study days 1 and 7 and study days 8 and 14, the participants took two measurements on the left wrist each day in the morning between 6 and 9 a.
The antihypertensive treatment regime was not changed during the study period. Patients were instructed how to correctly use the oscillometric Omron wrist device for home BP measurement with a standardized 30 min.
