And probably another set of books to describe the range of psychotherapies practiced in other countries and cultures.

We will focus on some mainstream treat- ments you may have heard of or read about. The form of psychological treatment that has the widest scientific support for addressing anxiety disorders is cognitive- behavioral therapy CBT. If the brochure does not provide enough information. Psychological Treatments for Shyness and Social Anxiety Talk Therapies These approaches involve a client and therapist working together.

There are hundreds of different kinds of psychotherapy out there more flavors than Baskin-Robbins. When you are inquiring about available ser- vices. There is or at least there should be a solid theoretical basis for how the talk will lead to improvement in the condition s being addressed.

Supportive psychotherapy is a flexible treatment. Our impression is that many people have found supportive psychotherapy helpful in dealing with life problems—some of which may be directly related to social anxiety and some of which may not.

The therapist often also lends emotional support to help the client through times of crisis. Psychoanalysis and Analytically Oriented Psychotherapy. In classical Choosing the Rig ht Treat me nt We are not aware of any studies showing that supportive psychotherapy can help overcome shyness or social anxiety.

Our socially anxious clients are often horrified when we suggest they attend a group program. But it turns out that a major advantage of group treatment is that it allows people to develop both confidence and coping strategies in a real-life social situation. There is not a lot of energy directed toward understanding the underlying or historical reasons for symptoms. Another advantage is the cost. Some preliminary research has been promising. Which method do you think is better? Working to overcome social anxiety in a group setting is like learning to swim in the water!

Psychoanaly- sis was one of the first forms of psychological treatment. As the name suggests. Or she could wade into the shallow end of the pool and work with the instructor in the water. There is not a lot of scientific evidence that analytically oriented psy- chotherapy is helpful in the treatment of shyness or social anxiety. VRT has been so successful for treating flying phobias that new systems are being devel- oped to simulate other anxiety-provoking situations. Carl Jung. The theory behind this form of treatment usually stems from the writings of Sigmund Freud.

We often hear them say that the treatment helped them better understand them- selves. A course of VRT for flying phobia may involve anywhere from 6 to 10 sessions. Biofeedback is another form of therapy sometimes suggested for treat- 50 Tr iumph O ver Shy ness. Other Forms of Therapy While hypnosis is sometimes used to treat anxiety and phobias.

Goggles present a realistic picture of an aircraft environment. Whether it will prove beneficial for this and other forms of social anxiety remains to be determined. It is very acceptable.

What About Starting with Medication? No treatment is without side effects—even therapy can make people uncomfortable—and medications are no exception. But the possi- bility of side effects is one reason you may prefer to try self-help or CBT before taking medication. You might then see a physician who can prescribe med- ication. This may make it easier for you to embark on a self-help program. Self-help is not enough! What if your family physician recommends that you take medication for social anxiety?

By starting medication early in the course of treatment. You find that it has helped you. By this we mean that you start with one form of treatment. If you are experiencing these symptoms. There is little information to help us predict who is likely to respond to a particular form of treatment.

We believe that it makes sense. After several sessions. We recommend a sequential approach instead. CBT alone. In most cases. It is important to remember that medications will work while you take them. The more you practice while you are taking the medication.
